How to Get There

Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is located in the southern part of Sri Lanka, near the town of Tangalle. Here are the best routes and transport options to reach the sanctuary:

From Tangalle

By Car:

Drive south on the A2 highway towards Hambantota. After approximately 18 km, take a left turn onto Hungama Gurupokuna Road. Continue for about 5 km until you reach the sanctuary. The entire drive should take about 25-30 minutes from Tangalle.

By Tuk-Tuk:

Hiring a tuk-tuk is a convenient option, and it takes around 20-30 minutes to get to the sanctuary from Tangalle. It’s a great way to experience the local culture along the way.

By Public Transport:

You can take a bus from Tangalle to Hambantota, and then inform the conductor that you're heading to Kalametiya. The bus ride is a cost-effective way to reach the sanctuary, and it’s a short walk from the drop-off point to the entrance.

From Colombo

By Car:

For visitors coming from Colombo, the drive to Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary takes about 5 hours. Take the E1 highway via Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, and Embilipitiya, and then proceed towards Kalametiya.

By Bus:

There are several buses from Colombo to Tangalle, where you can transfer to local transport for the final leg of the journey to the sanctuary.

Best Time to Visit

Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to visit for bird watching, as many species are most active during these hours. The sanctuary is open year-round, but the peak bird watching season is from November to April when migratory birds visit.
