1. What are the best times to visit Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary?
The best time to visit is during the early morning (6:00 AM – 10:00 AM) and late afternoon (3:00 PM – 6:00 PM), as this is when birds are most active. The sanctuary is open year-round, but the peak bird watching season is from November to April when migratory birds visit the sanctuary.
2. What should I bring for a tour?
- Comfortable walking shoes: The sanctuary has walking paths that take you through various ecosystems.
- Binoculars: Essential for bird watching and spotting wildlife from a distance.
- Camera: To capture the stunning landscapes and bird species.
- Hat and sunscreen: The sun can be strong, so protection is essential.
- Insect repellent: To protect against mosquitoes and insects.
- Light jacket or sweater: Early mornings and evenings can be cool, especially during the winter months.
3. How long do the tours last?
Our tours vary in length:
- Morning Bird Watching Tour: 3 hours
- Afternoon Nature Walk: 2 hours
- Photography Tour: 4 hours
- Fishing Tour: 4 hours
- Full-Day Guided Tour: 6-8 hours

5. Are there any age restrictions for the tours?
Our tours are suitable for visitors of all ages. However, we recommend the Fishing Tour and Photography Tour for those over 12 years old due to the nature of the activities. Young children are welcome on the Nature Walks and Bird Watching Tours.
6. Is there an entrance fee to the sanctuary?

The entrance fee helps support the sanctuary’s conservation efforts.
7. What wildlife can I expect to see?
In addition to over 150 species of birds, you can spot a variety of other wildlife, including:
- Mammals: Monkeys, deer, and wild boar

- Aquatic Life: Various species of fish and amphibians
- The sanctuary is also home to many species of migratory birds during the winter months.
8. How do I get to Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary?

9. Are the tours guided?
Yes, all our tours are guided by our expert, Nuwan Liyanage, who has extensive knowledge of the sanctuary’s bird species and ecosystem. Nuwan’s deep passion for nature and birds makes the tour both educational and enjoyable.
10. Can I bring my own food and drinks?
We recommend bringing a water bottle to stay hydrated, but please note that food and snacks are not provided on the tours. Visitors can bring their own packed meals, and there are local restaurants near the sanctuary where you can stop for a meal after your visit.
11. Is the sanctuary wheelchair accessible?
The sanctuary has some uneven terrain and natural paths that may not be fully accessible for wheelchairs or strollers. However, we do offer a more relaxed tour route for those with mobility challenges. Please contact us in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements.
12. Can I visit the sanctuary without booking a tour?
Yes, visitors are welcome to explore the sanctuary on their own. However, we highly recommend booking a guided tour to make the most of your visit and learn more about the birds and wildlife. A guide can also help you spot more species that you may miss on your own.
